Membership ensures the protection of appellations of origin (AO) through a single registration. This means that once the official closure of the EU is complete, the other members of the Geneva Act will in principle enjoy rapid, high and permanent protection. I welcome the positive decision of the Council and Parliament that the EU becomes a member of the Geneva Act. This is a step forward in better protecting our geographical indications at the multilateral level. They reflect the EU`s valuable geographical diversity, authenticity and know-how in agricultural products, food and beverages. This accession will complement the protection already granted by international bilateral agreements. .
